Menstrual cycle and fasting
What is the ruling if a fasting woman had her menstruation cycle starts just 2-3 hours before the iftaar? Should a woman continue with her fasting or (qada) making up of this fast is required?
Jazak Allahu Khayr
Wa alaykum salam.
If a lady starts a day fasting and then her menstrual cycle starts before sunset, she should eat, as this means that the fast of that day does not count. She should not imitate those who are fasting by refraining from eating and drinking for the remainder of the day because the ruling of fasting does not apply to a lady who is menstruating or someone who has post-natal bleeding. She will have to make up that day’s fast as well as all other days missed due to menstruation.
If a lady’s menstrual cycle ends in Ramadan before sunset, it is wajib upon her to not eat or drink until maghrib time. This is because when the cycle ended she entered into a state in which fasting applies to her, but she could not fast that day as she was in a state of menstruation at the beginning of the day so out respect for the month of Ramadan she should imitate those fasting and refrain from eating and drinking until sunset. The same ruling applies to someone who was not fasting because he was travelling; if he reaches home before sunset, he must not eat until sunset for the same reason.
