Question:

اسلام واليكم ورمةالله وبركاته
May Allah reward all for allowing this Q and A with the best of both worlds.

If when reading witr salah and in the third rakaat one forgets to read qunoot and goes into ruku and then realised that he forgot to read the qunoot is one allowed to come up and read the Qunoot or does he need to read sijda sahwah?

Answer:

و عليكم السلام و رحمة الله و بركاته

According to the Hanafi school, it is necessary (wajib) to say the qunut in the third cycle (rak`at) of the witr prayer. The place for this is before the bowing (ruku`). [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; `Ala al-Din `Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya]

Therefore to compensate for leaving out the qunut if one forgets to make the supplication (qunut), one simply performs the prostrations of forgetfulness (sajda al-sahw) before closing the prayer.
